Video: How to update kitchen furniture

Good afternoon - today I will show you how to update the upholstery on an old sofa, on an armchair, on a chair and on an ottoman with my own hands. I will tell you everything step by step - how to remove the upholstery from the seats, backs and armrests of sofas and armchairs. How to make a new upholstery and how to sew it onto a sofa frame. And to make it more interesting and fun for you, I chose furniture in patchwork style patchwork... These fun, brightly colored patchwork sofas and armchairs will inspire you to a true DIY feat.

The patchwork style (or patchwork, as it is called) is very beautiful in any interior. In this article, we ...

  1. Check out the exclusive upholstery in this patchwork style.
  2. And also I will give a few ideas - HOW TO MAKE small pieces of furniture WITH YOUR HANDS - ottomans, chairs, armchairs and sofas in patchwork style. That is, I WILL SHOW STEP BY STEP how to change the upholstery common subject furniture on a fashionable patchwork.

So let's start in order to get acquainted with the patchwork style for upholstered furniture.

Patchwork sofa - tapestry and upholstery fabric.

Here's an example of how matching tapestry fabric can also give an interesting patchwork effect. The sofa turns out to be very picturesque. I will tell you how to replace the upholstery of the sofa in the same article (just below).

But on this patchwork sofa (photo below) we see combinations of different textures of fabrics. Their roughness and density are approximately the same.(this is important in patchwork) - but the texture is different, with a velvet dusting pattern, with embossed stripes, with convex textile spots under crocodile skin.

And here is a patchwork sofa with a bold combination of upholstery colors, where semi-matte fabrics coexist with satin gloss, and colorful fabrics with patterned and monochromatic ones.

But the photo below is an example of patchwork sewing, when the upholstery is made of different fabrics, united by a common FLORISTIC THEME. A very beautiful replacement for furniture upholstery. Below I will tell you how to make such a do-it-yourself upholstery change.

And here is an example of a sofa where all the rags have the same square shape- the effect of tiled cladding.

Such upholstery for a sofa is created in the same way as usual ... Only the fabric for renewal is not taken in one piece, but already cut and sourced from rags. Such a patchwork fabric is spread on the floor and the necessary element is cut out of it for upholstery of the backrest, seat or armrest.

Sofas are fairly simple pieces of furniture.

And don't be afraid of them.

The sofa consists of three elements - a wooden frame + springs or foam + upholstery fabric.

Here in the photo below we see a wooden frame. And furniture ribbons are attached to this sofa frame (cross to cross), and furniture springs are already sewn to them (you can also see it in the photo). Then foam rubber and another layer of elastic pad are simply placed on top, and then fabric on top.

As a result, we get such a sofa (by the way, it would be more fun in a patchwork style).

HOW TO CHANGE THE UPHOLSTERY of a sofa or chair - with your own hands.

You can make a patchwork upholstery for an armchair or sofa at home. It's simple.

I remember in my childhood when the upholstery of our armchairs and the sofa began to look not quite fresh, the parents unscrewed the bolts and disassembled the sofa.

That is, they squeezed out the metal staples (with which the upholstery is nailed to the wood-foam rubber frame.

Then they took off the upholstery, turned it over with the seamy fresh side out and nailed it back with staples.

Although I'm lying (staples and staples then we did not know yet). So Dad nailed all the upholstery with tiny nails with plastic caps. It turned out smart New furniture... We were very proud to have updated the furniture like this.

Here, by the same principle, you can make a patchwork patchwork chair with your own hands.

  1. If your sofa or chair is not one-piece frame - but consist of separate parts, then you need to disassemble, unscrew the bolts, disconnect the parts from each other
  2. On each part, using a flat screwdriver, pry out and squeeze out the clips holding the upholstery fabric, remove the upholstery.

Removing the upholstery or upholstery is faster. Small armchair or chair. therefore work will pass not that exhaustingly long.

And removing the upholstery from the sofa is already more fuss. Here in the photo we see how this process takes place.

After the upholstery is removed (it goes to the pattern sample).

And the sofa frame with foam rubber can be modified ... If the foam rubber is pressed down, it can be replaced (partially or completely) or put the foam rubber in the pressed places.

And myself The WOODEN FRAME of the sofa can be painted in a new color. Here's how in the photo below - we make a white one from a dark frame (we paint with acrylic paint - it is odorless, it can be glossy or matte).

  1. And now the upholstery removed from the sofa (or chair or chair) will be a model for cutting a new one. Here in the photo below, we see how the old upholstery is used as a template for cutting out the new upholstery.

Only our parts of the old upholstery we will lay on a ready-made patchwork... I will tell you how to make a patchwork in a special lesson(and then a link to it will work here).

  1. We make a patchwork - we put on it old upholstery- we outline with chalk and cut along the contour.
  2. And we nail the new patchwork upholstery (a copy of the old one) back to the wood-foam rubber part of the chair, sofa, chair. To do this, you can rent a stapler (tool rental services are everywhere, you can find it in the newspaper or on the Internet).

  1. And so we do with each piece of the pattern - we return the new upholstery piece to its place on the wooden furniture frame.
  2. Then we put the chair back together - we put the parts together - screw the bolts in. And we get a new handmade patchwork chair.

But if the foam rubber on your chair is leaky, it would be nice to replace the foam filling of the sofa and armchairs too. To do this, you can call a trained person (or watch several YouTube videos on this topic and try to do it yourself). In fact, it is not so difficult already.

This is how beautiful patchwork furniture looks in the interior of a modern home.

Refresh an old chair - everyone can do it. You just have to start ... then continue ... and then finish. And that's all.))

But if you doubt your abilities as a novice master-lomaster, then you can start with a small experiment - replace the upholstery on a small piece of furniture. For example, on a chair.

HOW TO CHANGE THE UPHOLSTERY OF A CHAIR - in the patchwork style.

(quickly and easily with your own hands)

We treat the upholstery of old chairs in the same way as with the upholstery of an armchair - it can be replaced simply and easily.

The seat-seats are very easy to take out - even I, with my almost childish hands (I was 17 years old) made new upholstery for chairs ... Without any master classes - just on a whim: let me, I think, I'll see how all this is removed here. And I figured it out - I made fresh seats. Satisfied was like an elephant.

Here's how the chair upholstery is replaced:

The seat was removed from the chair, wrapped in a new upholstery patchwork cloth, the edges of the cloth were wrapped to the wrong side and fixed with brackets.

And then a piece of thick fabric (white fabric in the photo below) was sewn on top of this bottom of the seat, so that it covered all our uneven edges of the flaps. NS that nadon tissue was also fixed with staples. You can smear it here and there with glue or double-sided tape (optional).

And a note ...

Sometimes it happens that the old chair has a plywood seat (on which the foam rubber is attached) decayed or broke.

Then you can cut a new one out of plywood. Or you can do seat base made of fastening rigid furniture tapes... Their cross-to-cross is attached with brackets to the chair frame (like in the photo below) and a foam rubber seat is attached to this base.

Then such a wicker base on the back of the chair is sewn up with a canvas - also with the help of staples (photo below).

Also, if you sew such FURNITURE RIGID TAPES on the back of a chair, you can completely modify its shape and turn the chair into a small chair.

And then our patchwork chair with a new shape of a solid back will look completely different.

DO-HAND CHAIR COVER - in patchwork style.

Here we see a simple cutting of the chair cover, where each plane is cut out separately - separately the backrest, separately the sides of the cover.

And the upper surface of the seat and back of the chair cover is made of separate long strips of fabric that are sewn together along the length (patchwork seam).

And then when we get uniform striped fabric upper detail, we sew appliqués of flowers on it (see in the photo, there are flowers on the back of the chair).

These flowers we cut from the fabric on which they are painted, We glue them to our part of the front of the seat back, glue them on a double-sided adhesive interlining or dublerin (such a spider web is sold in fabric and sewing stores). And when the flowers are well smoothed with an iron and glued to the double-sided dublerin, we also sew them along the contour (along the edges) with a machine stitch.

And then we sew together all the sides of the cover - the back-seat + sides + the back side of the cover.

By the way (as you can see in the photo) on the bottom of such a cover, you can also glue-sew the drawings of flowers cut from the fabric.

And you can also do for chairs, these are the patchwork seat cushions.

How to make quilted fabric (with depressed pits)- I'll tell you now ... when we get to the replacement of the upholstery on the ottomans.

In the meantime, look what a wonderful patchwork stool.

Stools are also sewn with elegant patchwork upholstery too on the same principle ...

  1. Foam circle (or square) - sits on the glue directly on the seat of the stool.
  2. Then a patchwork fabric is placed on top.
  3. The edges of the fabric are folded against the sides of the stool and fixed with a staple.

You can also nail a board to such a stool - for the back (not high as in the photo above) and then you get almost a chair. We wrap this wooden extended back with foam rubber (we put it on glue and staples) and also upholstery with patchwork.

And here's another idea for do-it-yourself patchwork upholstery - these are such round armchairs.

Round CHAIRS-CHAIRS - upholstered in a patchwork style.

To get a pattern for this a semicircular armchair cover, need to attach a sheet of tissue paper to the back of the chair and trace all the lines with a pencil.

Later put paper on the carpet and already trim the lines, removing their extra curvature of a pencil sloppy sketch.

And then when we have such semicircular pattern for future patchwork chair covers. We can come up with a mosaic filling for it with different pieces of fabric. Complement with applique, embroidery, patch of knitted elements (flowers can be crocheted).

We simply sew such an upholstery on the back of the chair (without a staple and iron staples) - we wrapped the cover around the back and fixed the edges of the patchwork with threads - at the bottom with a long seam along its entire edge.

Now let's move on to patchwork ottomans. We will also make them with our own hands.

POUCHES AND BENCHES - Patchwork (with patchwork upholstery)

Your ottoman can be of any shape: long or small.

It can be made in the same color as the chair. If you have an old ottoman with a depressed seat, then it's time to breathe into it new life... Throw away old flattened foam and buy a new one (at a fabric store or in a hardware store) and create new home furniture with your own hands - ottoman in a patchwork style.

Its surface can be even when the patchwork simply covers the rectangle cut out of foam rubber.

Replacing the upholstery on the ottoman Is a fairly simple job (compared to an armchair and a sofa).

Therefore, if this is your first experience in updating the upholstery, then start with an ottoman. You will enjoy quick results, and gain the confidence to take on the bigger feats of upholstery. And then you will swing at the old grandmother's chair.

Another surface of a patchwork ottoman can be quilted.

HOW TO MAKE A QUILTED POUCH SURFACE IN Patchwork Style.

Step one - buttons are made.

Fabric buttons are ordinary buttons with long legs that are wrapped in the same fabric. Wrapped the top and bottom of the leg, the fabric was fixed with threads, in a stretch.

Step two - sew on the buttons in the right places.

We sew such fabric buttons in even rows to our patchwork fabric.

You can immediately mark the places of future pits on the foam rubber seat with a felt-tip pen. And attaching patchwork to the foam rubber, check the correctness of the rows while sewing on the buttons.

STEP three - create a quilted surface.

When the canvas is laid on the foam pillow, we again stretch the thread into each sewn button - we make several turns through the eye of the button and pierce the foam rubber through - in a stretch - so that the button is pressed into the foam rubber.

On the reverse side of the foam rubber (from below) we also grab a button (it does not have to be elegant - a simple button will do) and, threading through the lower button (under the foam rubber), we go up again through the foam rubber to the upper elegant button.

And we do this several times for strength. pull the thread from the top button (on the patchwork surface) to the bottom button (which is below the foam rubber) - and back ... And we get a quilted surface - simply and quickly

But such soft ottomans can be sewn by yourself - without a wooden frame. The filler is synthetic winterizer or foam rubber.

And from the remnants of fabric, you can make a patchwork frame for a mirror ...

Here are some ideas for renovating furniture in your home.

I hope this article has inspired you, and most importantly, removed the "indecision syndrome" that most novice self-taught artisans suffer from.

Everything is simple - and everything is easy ... If just START doing business.

Start small- update the upholstery on an old ottoman, chair, stool. If you don't have old furniture in your home, your friends will have it. Or you can buy it for next to nothing at any of the online flea markets. Buy for 100 rubles and turn it into a spectacular thing for all 5,000.

Good luck with your bold creativity.

Olga Klishevskaya, specially for the site

A major renovation of the room during the renovation will be incomplete if you do not take care of its furnishings. You can, of course, buy a completely new headset for the new image of the room. But is it worth it to categorically abandon the old chest of drawers or grandmother's canapes, if they are dear to you and can still serve faithfully?

You can make a stylish, bright designer item from an old sofa, you need to paint the base and drag the soft part.

However, this will take a little of your own effort. Surely you will immediately have to decide how to update the sofa with your own hands, since this thing is one of the most common pieces of furniture for any home. Therefore, it is quite natural if the reincarnation of a somewhat outdated interior in a new way begins with the sofa.

Materials and tools required for work

The following materials, tools and devices will help to qualitatively and quickly update the sofa, which it is advisable to stock up on in advance:

To pull furniture, you will need: a drill, a screwdriver, a ruler, a knife, scissors, a hammer, a stapler, furniture nails.

  • flat and Phillips screwdrivers;
  • a set of locksmith keys;
  • pliers;
  • side cutters;
  • nippers;
  • mounting stapler;
  • hammer for shoemaking;
  • sewing machine;
  • scissors;
  • marker (chalk);
  • needles and threads;
  • furniture nails.

Preparatory operations: disassembly, checking of springs, pattern

To carry out a full cycle of restoration old sofa should be disassembled first. Moreover, disassembly must be carried out in a certain order in order to perform work with high quality... In many cases, this will not be difficult to do, since manufacturers most often make body sofas, which greatly facilitates repair and restoration operations.

The pillows, backs, ottomans and other overhead elements are removed from the specified object. Then use a screwdriver and side cutters (pliers) to remove the old upholstery. This should be done very carefully, since the worn-out fabric can break from careless movement, and it will later be needed whole.

After "exposing" the internal space, it is imperative to check the integrity and performance of the wooden frame, springs and filler. Cracked or rotted frame bars are replaced with new ones. Also, metal springs are replaced without repair (if, of course, they are present in the sofa) in case of severe wear, looseness or cracks.

When restoring upholstered furniture, it is advisable to change the filler, regardless of its appearance. The fact is that foam rubber, which is most often used as a material for the specified sofa component, belongs to a very short-lived raw material.

Since in recent years the industry has developed a variety of modern materials for the field of furniture production, it is recommended that instead of foam rubber, take any of these materials, for example latex or polyurethane foam. For our case, these polymers are valuable because they are designed for a long service life and perfectly "keep" the given shape. At the same time, dense and cheap fabric (burlap, cotton fabric, etc.) will be used for the auxiliary upholstery of the internal elements of the frame, hidden from the human eye.

Now you can start making patterns for the new upholstery. The fabric of the old upholstery is used as a kind of pattern for it. It is for this reason that it should be treated with particular care when removing it from the frame.

It is better to mark the removed upholstery where it was, and use it to carve out a new one.

It is strongly recommended to mark all removed upholstery fragments exactly where they were located on the sofa and carefully lay them out on the floor. This will facilitate the task of determining the total volume of new fabric that will have to be purchased for the constriction.

After the fabric is purchased, new blanks are cut from the old patches. Subsequently, they will need to be sewn, keeping the pattern and paying attention to the quality of the stitches.

Padding old furniture: procedure

To update means to tighten it.

This term denotes a complete replacement of an outdated fabric "cover" with a new coating, observing all the technological nuances that were used during the initial assembly of the sofa.

By the way, experts advise doing this periodically every 5-10 years. For approximately this period, the fabric and frame wear out a lot, and the owner of the specified item begins another rearrangement in his apartment. And if he does not have the feeling that the sofa is morally outdated, then the new fashion zigzag will force a person to take up the renewal of his furnishings.

To update the frame, wooden blocks of the same size are used, they are nailed in several places.

The constriction process begins with the installation of new elements of the rigid frame - bars and springs. To replace damaged wooden elements new bars must be cut in strict accordance with the dimensions of the old ones. During installation, metal fasteners and furniture glue are used. It is better to select suitable springs without special skills with the help of specialists.

Cut new fabric fragments along the edges must first be sewn on a sewing machine. After that, they are placed in those places where their former "counterparts" were previously located. Then they are nailed to the frame with furniture nails or with a stapler, all the time bending the edges of the fabric inward so that no rough ugly seams are formed. At the same time, the fabric should be constantly pulled.

According to another version of the constriction, original covers should be sewn from fabric blanks, in shape and size corresponding to the upholstery of the seats and the back of the sofa. When the covers are ready, they are simply put on the indicated structures and sewn up. Finally, the individual removable parts of the sofa are assembled in the reverse order of disassembly. Renovated or new decorative overlays and pillows are attached to the renovated furniture.

We renew old upholstered furniture

Sometimes people become attached not only to living beings, but also to the city, home and even furniture. After all, how sometimes you do not want to throw away your favorite chair or ottoman, which brings you warmth, coziness and convenience. But what if your favorite thing is out of date? Believe me, this is not as difficult as it seems at first glance. You just need to breathe new life into it, that is, to update the upholstered furniture. Of course, you can call specialists and pay a lot of money for the hauling and reconstruction of furniture, but it will be easier and more interesting to do it yourself, putting all your original ideas into your favorite thing.

First, make a sketch of what you have conceived, come up with how your "new" furniture will look like. The decor style of the converted product must necessarily match the entire appearance of the room or room. Thus, choosing the right textiles, you can easily and for little money update and give fashionable chic even to the most "decrepit" sofa or soft ottoman.

Style

By choosing the right design style, you can transform any outdated upholstered furniture beyond recognition:

modern sofa

  • Glamorous Empire style prefers strict lines and striking color contrast. The upholstery in bright red, yellow interspersed with rich purple, pearl gray or white will make your old armchair the best exhibit in the interior of the room;
  • For minimalism, use monochrome color tones, simple textures and bright warm shades;
  • The country style, loved by many, offers the use of rough fabrics and provincial simplicity (burlap, thick fabrics, canvas).
  • Methods for updating upholstered furniture

    The first and easiest way is to sew covers on a sofa, armchairs or chairs. Today it is quite a fashionable and popular option, in which the renewal of upholstered furniture takes place quite quickly and without special costs. Heavy velvet covers or light and cheerful “clothes” for furniture with all kinds of decorative elements in the form of assemblies, ruffles or bows will perfectly update your “worn out” furniture. Plus, the covers are pretty practical. After all, they can always be washed or replaced with new ones. Having bought the necessary material and sewing the chosen style, having previously processed all the edges with an overlock, the cover should be fixed with an elastic band so that it does not slide off the furniture.

    The second method is to create an appliqué that will be appropriate on both new upholstery and old fabric. With the help of it, you can hide the formed flaws or even give the furniture your own special style. Applications can be sewn onto the fabric of the upholstery fabric, glued, and also applied with special paints for stencil fabrics.

    updated sofa with new upholstery

    But the most common way is the hauling. In this case, the very shape of the old furniture will remain the same, but its appearance, using fabric with bright color, with an unusual texture, can be radically changed. Getting started, you first need to completely disassemble the old product.

    Padding of a sofa or armchair

    For constriction you will need:

    1. Foam rubber. It is used for the softness of the product.
    2. A synthetic winterizer is used to separate the upholstery and the inner filler.
    3. Upholstery fabric itself. For furniture that will often be used for its intended purpose, it is best to choose a dense and durable material.
    4. Working tools: a fairly sharp knife, a ruler, scissors, a construction tape and a special stapler with staples.

    As mentioned earlier, the fabric for the constriction should be very dense. Synthetic leather, beautiful jacquard or tapestry are perfect here. It is very important to calculate correctly the right amount footage with a good and sufficient margin. If the upholstery material is patterned, then in order to combine all its parts, it is necessary to increase the fabric consumption by about 25%.

    sofa cover

    After you remove the old upholstery, do not rush to throw it away, because it can be a good pattern for a new cover. Spread out on the floor new fabric face down, put the old one on it and straighten it well, removing all unnecessary and folds. When drawing the outline, be sure to learn that old stuff may deform during the operation of the product. Cutting out the stencil of the future upholstery carefully with scissors, it is better to make a margin for more allowances. All surplus tissue is removed during operation.

    The next stage is replacing and laying the foam rubber on those parts that need to be updated. Then we put a synthetic winterizer and cover it with new upholstery material on top. After making sure that the upholstery is in the desired position, we fix it with a stapler. The staples need to be fastened every 2 cm, while making a neat fold and watching the upholstery so that it does not wrinkle or move.

    Pay due attention to the wooden elements of upholstered furniture, because they are also worn out over time and need proper restoration. It is best to re-varnish wooden openwork pads, armrests, legs and other hard elements or paint (also under varnish), if it is appropriate for general style premises. Wood surface first, it is carefully processed with sandpaper. Cracks should be eliminated with a special wood putty, followed by surface treatment, but with fine sandpaper. After all the preparatory procedures, the tree is varnished in a suitable color.

    For this simple principle you can update any old furniture. Of course, in every business you need skill and experience, and in order to understand all the subtleties of work, it is better to start with simple products, for example, from an ottoman or a chair, and only then proceed to updating more complex upholstered furniture.

    Do you want to create a unique interior at no extra cost?

    Old furniture will help you with this, a photo of the alteration of which you can find with us. There are many ways to transform old, familiar items.

    The choice of method depends on the purpose of using the furniture and the type of coating, as well as its condition at the time of repair.

    You can find a step-by-step photo master class for making furniture with your own hands from old interior items on our website. The furniture renovation process includes two main stages:

    • repair;
    • decoration.

    Let's consider in more detail what to focus on.

    Repair of tables

    Tables are distinguished by functionality into writing, dining, kitchen and magazine tables. Depending on their purpose, their structure also differs, and, consequently, the process of restoration. Typically, dining tables consist of 4 legs, a bow and a table top. They can be solid or folding. When reworking such furniture, you should pay special attention to the condition of all elements, as well as their fastening. The legs should be the same, no damage. They can be replaced if necessary.

    The option of restoring old armchairs with covers in vintage style

    The chair consists of three main elements:

    • legs;
    • seats;
    • backs.

    All of them may fail sooner or later. If the legs become the cause of the breakage, then they must be firmly fixed, since otherwise the use of the chair becomes dangerous. If the seat breaks, then it can be replaced by cutting out a corresponding piece from plywood or fiberboard. The same can be done with the backrest. You can also soften the stool if you wish. Advice! If you decide to install or replace the upholstery on the chair, it is best to use fabric stitched to the foam rubber. You can find one in a textile store, and it is worth fixing it with a construction stapler.

    Old furniture: photos of design options using painting

    As you know, any piece of furniture should be not only functional, but also attractive. Therefore, when old furniture is being updated, the photo of which you can see below, it is necessary to break down the work into several stages. The first stage is surface preparation.

    Advice! It is best to use a water-based acrylic paint. It does not contain toxic substances, does not emit a strong odor and dries quickly. This gives the surface a glossy, attractive appearance. But if you are good with an aerosol can, then it will work.

    Decorating

    The restoration of old furniture, photos of which are presented below, includes decor. you can use various techniques and combine them. The most common is decoupage. To do this, you need the following:

    Advice! It is best to use large colored napkins with appropriate motives as the image.

    Lubricate the surface with glue, gently attach and smooth the picture. Let everything dry a little, then open it with varnish. It is worth noting that there is no doubt about the effectiveness of using this method during the restoration of old furniture with your own hands.

    Another equally interesting decorating method is the application of patterns using lace. To do this, you will need:

    • lace;
    • paint of the corresponding color;
    • Scotch.

    Take a piece of lace and attach it to the place you plan to decorate. Secure the ends with tape. It is advisable to cover the rest of the area with paper or film. Apply paint with a brush or use aerosol cans... Let the product dry. Remove the tape, paper, and lace.

    Advice! If you want to decorate a large area, then it is best to use a piece of guipure of the appropriate size.

    Both of the above methods are quite effective. Instead of lace and guipure, you can use paper templates. As a rule, often when decoupage and restoration of old furniture, wallpaper left over after repair is used.

    Padding of upholstered furniture

    Cut off the required piece of upholstery, attach it so that the edges go into the place where the old one ends, and attach with a stapler. You can carry out such manipulations with the soft part as well as with the back and by-lines.

    If the upholstered furniture has lost its volume and softness, they can be returned by replacing the foam rubber. It must be fixed with special small studs. Add new volume to the seat of an old chair

    You can add any volume to your product. To do this, it is necessary to choose foam rubber of the appropriate thickness. If a folding mechanism is present, then after the constriction it should function as before.

    Advice! If you need to replace the upholstery and restore its volume, it is advisable to use fabric stitched to foam rubber. You can purchase one from a specialist store, or you can sew both materials yourself.

    Decoration of upholstered furniture upholstery

    If you change both layers of upholstery, you can apply different types of decoration options that will give your furniture a more aesthetic look. There are many ways to do this. We'll look at two of the most common:

    1. The fabric used for the stretch can be stitched in with patterned seams. This will create a special decorative effect.
    2. Purchase buttons or textile clips and use them to tighten the fabric and foam rubber, connecting them together.

    Updating upholstered furniture with a cover

    A more economical and simpler way to hide stains is to sew covers. To do this, you can pick up any fabric you like. It is important that it is durable. Most often used for this purpose:

    • barakan;
    • velours;
    • velvet;
    • jeans;
    • coarse calico;
    • other.

    Having taken measurements for the size of the sofa, you can sew a cover that will cover the back, seat and, if necessary, the leg of your sofa.

    A small workshop on sewing a removable cover for a pouf

    When making a cover, you can use a variety of decor techniques. You can put embroidery in a certain place. If you wish, you can sew on the applique. For this, fragments of the pattern are cut out of pieces of fabric and sewn to the base, forming a single picture.

    You can also apply the currently popular patchwork - the art of making products from rags. In this case, you can use pieces of old unnecessary things to make a cover.

    Updating the story with plywood

    Scuffs, stains and even torn upholstery on the backside can be hidden with a special overlay. To make it you will need:

    • plywood;
    • small metal corners;
    • the smallest furniture screws.

    You can cut the plywood yourself or ask for help from specialists where you will purchase it. You will need 5 pieces according to the size of your paper. The cover should cover the outside, inside, back, front and top. After making measurements, just make 5 corresponding rectangles and fasten them from the inside of the structure using corners and self-tapping screws.

    Further, it is enough to simply put on the structure on the past. It can not only play the role of decoration, but also be quite functional. You can use the overlay as a mini table. If necessary, apply paint or decorate it in any way convenient for you.

    Advice! After making the plywood trim, sand it on both sides with sandpaper.

    It always brings joy when we buy something new into the house, for example, furniture. ... Each apartment or house must have armchairs, a sofa, ottomans, chairs. We use them all the time.

    It is difficult to imagine an apartment without a sofa, armchairs and other upholstered furniture.

    Time passes, the upholstery becomes ugly, in places it is erased, holes, stains, traces of paint, felt-tip pens, in places adhered plasticine appear. All this remains, especially when there are small children in the house. They will take furniture to the extreme in just a few months. Stains cannot be cleaned, holes cannot be darned, even a blanket will not save you from their pranks, except perhaps a European case. Furniture becomes already unusable, ceases to decorate the interior.

    After a few years, the upholstery may lose its former attractiveness, deteriorate and no longer fit into the interior of the room.

    Many simply get rid of it, throw it into a landfill or take it to a dacha. Others, on the other hand, cannot get rid of old furniture. simply because it is comfortable or it is a pity to throw it away, and there is simply no way to buy a new sofa or armchair. What to do in such cases? There is only one thing left - to restore, to make banner of the sofa ... Of course, you can turn to specialists, but it is easier and much more profitable, in order to save the budget, to do it yourself.

    Not everyone knows that hauling a sofa with your own hands is not very difficult.

    A big plus if the sofa has a high-quality base. Old pieces of furniture much sturdier than those that are produced now.

    It won't take much time and effort to replace the upholstery.

    Restoration of furniture at home has some advantages.

    • You do the hauling of the sofa with any material you like, and to your liking, you can add picturesque elements.
    • Carrying out work on replacing the upholstery, if necessary, you can repair the frame or spring block.
    • Antiquated sofas tend to be the sturdiest and most benign, prevailing in all properties over modern furniture.
    • Doing this work yourself, you will not spend a lot of money, and a new sofa or chair is much more expensive.
    • You do not have to throw your favorite soft corner into a landfill due to the fact that it has fallen into disrepair.

    It is worth deciding - you will do the stretching of the sofa yourself, in which case it will take more time to work, or trust the specialists, they will do it in a short period, maybe in your home, without transporting it to the workshop.

    Deciding on the design

    To change the look of an old sofa, you can sew a new cover, make pillows, capes of a very different model. Furniture will sparkle with new colors. If you want to hauling , then it can be partially produced by replacing some of the upholstery elements. There are many varieties, from typical to creative.

    It is important that everything is in harmony.

    The patchwork cape will look extraordinary. You can make an extraordinary applique and stick it on the upholstery. For upholstering the sofa fit denim the cloth or artificial leather. The most often used furniture tapestry, high-quality leatherette, leather, synthetic velor special, artificial fur with a strong base, furniture jacquard. It is quite possible to sew removable covers from fabrics for clothes.

    If the sofa is not intended for decoration, but for the rest of all family members, then you will need strong upholstery that will last a long time.

    Necessary materials

    To begin work on replacing old upholstery, the first step is to decide what kind of fabric you choose a color scheme, with or without a pattern, artificial or natural material. There are many different types of furniture fabrics.

    Each fabric has technological and multifunctional quality levels.

    Let's decide what materials are needed. Beyond the fabric itself you need fittings, foam rubber of the required thickness, edging to cover the seams, felt, synthetic winterizer or batting as a filler, a zipper, marker needles, decorative buttons.

    Required tools

    Chose the fabric - you need to take it with a margin for the possibility of error, now we will prepare the tools that you will need: a sewing machine, a set of needles, strong threads (polyester), a flat screwdriver, a hammer, an anti-stapler to remove old staples, pliers, spanners(from 8 to 19 mm), side cutters, furniture stapler, scissors, staples (6-8 mm), sewing meter, square, metal ruler, chalk, screwdriver, drill, glue.

    The necessary set of tools.

    Hauling process: step by step instructions

    All work is divided into stages. First you need to disassemble the furniture ... We remove all pillows, rollers, decoration items. Then using necessary tools separate the back and sides of the sofa.

    Disassembly with the removal of individual components in the form of pillows, sidewalls, poufs.

    We dismantle the seat, separate the furniture from the base. The parts needed for fasteners must be folded into some container, they may be needed.

    All fasteners are folded together so as not to lose them.

    The next step is to dismantle the worn upholstery using a staple remover or a flat screwdriver. Old cloth you can leave it - it will be easier to cut out patterns on it. We remove dirt and dust accumulated inside. The old foam rubber must be thrown away and replaced with a new one.

    Work requires a certain amount of care so as not to break old skin and use it as a pattern for cutting out parts from new fabric.

    We look at the state of the spring block and frame. We carry out repairs if necessary. We strengthen all joints, tighten the screws.

    All screws must be carefully tightened, the joints of the parts must be strengthened, the wooden joints must be glued.

    On old fabric we cut out new patterns from the selected material, leaving allowances for the seams. We fasten the parts with special needles and grind them on a sewing machine. If you don't know how to sew, entrust the work to a dressmaker.

    The result of the entire constriction of the product largely depends on the quality of the new patterns.

    Now you need to cover the sofa. We attach a new upholstery to each individual piece, starting with decorative elements, then the seat, sidewalls, backrest. We carry out the tension carefully so that there are no distortions, using a stapler in our work.

    In order not to be mistaken with the amount of material, it is recommended to buy it with a small stock.

    The fabric on the details of the sofa is stretched evenly so that there are no distortions.

    Four centimeters - this should be the gap between the staples. Use the remaining material at your own discretion. We attach the foam rubber, and its remnants will be useful for upholstering other furniture.

    Having finished with the constriction, we assemble the structure, return the legs and other accessories to their place.

    How to properly sheathe a sofa with your own hands?

    The most significant point in this work is the acquisition of the required amount of fabric. ... How much you need can be roughly calculated by adding the length and width of the sofa and multiplying the resulting amount by two. For example, a sofa has a size of 2 x 1.8, then you will need to buy 7.6 m of fabric. To find out exactly, draw the layout required elements taking into account the equity direction. Extremely carefully you need to make a calculation for corner sofas, because they have a complex shape.

    When choosing fabrics, synthetic and very rough varieties should be avoided.

    It must be remembered that material with a large pattern or striped must be cut in one direction, respectively, the cost of fabric will increase. It is very important to consider the seam allowances. You definitely can't go wrong with upholstery fabric with a margin of one meter. It is worth considering the fact that it will be necessary to change the filler. In its quality, compacted foam rubber and a layer of padding polyester are quite suitable.

    In the structure of some pieces of furniture, parts filled with thick foam are allowed. This raises certain difficulties. To avoid this, the foam is wrapped in a thin synthetic winterizer, then attached and wrapped with an upholstery fabric.

    High-quality foam rubber has very small pores in its structure. After squeezing with a hand, it instantly straightens up and takes its previous shape.

    How to pull a sofa with your own hands correctly and avoid mistakes when sewing parts? It will be better if you read the master classes, watch video and photo lessons, read the necessary information on the Internet.

    This will help in a short time and thoroughly carry out necessary work and assemble the parts correctly.

    The final stage is decoration

    The sofa is the most important piece of furniture. We gather on it with the whole family, relax after work, watch TV, sometimes it's just great to lie around, covered with a cozy blanket. Its color scheme is significant in the design of the room.

    How to make an old sofa sparkle with new colors?

    To begin with, you can change the area around the furniture, for example, change the wallpaper or stick on photo wallpaper. Picturesque prints will look original. They are used to decorate pillows - some image is chosen and applied to the cover. This is best done in a workshop.

    You can yourself, using fabrics of different colors, sew strips or squares, or combine them.

    The most ideal option is to replace the cover. If you don’t want to sew yourself, buy it from the store. Now there is a very large selection of different colors and models. They have different features, including water-repellent, and even those that do not care about the sharp claws of your pets. Well, the easiest option is to cover the sofa with a blanket or two.

    This will create cozy atmosphere setting to rest.

    Cushions with new covers of a different color will give a zest to the sofa. Saturated shades are best placed in the center, neutral shades are preferable at the edges. If you like such a style as eclecticism, then feel free to use all your imagination here - combine the incompatible. Sofa cushions can be either square or round or triangular, large or small, of different colors, different fabrics, even fur.

    The color of the pillows can be matched to the curtains, lampshade, chair.

    Padding furniture is an exciting activity that does not present any particular difficulties. The main thing is to do everything according to the rules, and your home will have original old furniture that will serve for many years to come.

    • plywood;
    • small metal corners;

    Some of us are terrified of changes, others cannot live without them. But, whatever one may say, small changes from time to time are necessary for everyone. For example, renovation.
    Or something not so dramatic, like changing the upholstery of your favorite sofa: the appearance of the "living room king" has a great effect on the interior of the entire room. Do you think you can't do this without significant costs or even buying new furniture? But no! It turns out there is the simplest way how to update an old sofa practically "thank you". And no special skills are needed.

    If you want to update the living room, but there is neither time nor money for repairs, you can limit yourself to a small (yes daring) sofa. It turns out that you can change its upholstery at least every month, depending on the mood or the phase of the moon. The main thing is to do it correctly and safely. This is where a simple but effective life hack will help.

    To upgrade your old sofa you will need:

    1. A large piece of fabric or a ready-made sofa cover;
    2. Scissors;
    3. Construction stapler

    The author of the life hack used a furniture cover, but a piece of fabric of the appropriate size will also work.

    Cover the sofa completely, and carefully cut off the rest of the fabric that will be on the floor around the perimeter. Try to do it evenly - you will still need it.

    Move the cover back to reveal the seat. As shown in the photo.

    Just tuck the fabric inward a little, as shown in the photo. Really, the result is something similar to the upholstery?

    Now arm yourself with a construction stapler and literally nail the fabric to the wood frame of the sofa. Try to make "seams" in inconspicuous places, all the time pushing the fabric a little deeper into the seam. If you're wrong, no problem! Just remove the paperclip and start over.

    Use a separate piece of fabric for seating.

    Remember that piece of fabric from step one? He will help you hide all the sloppiness of the work. Just make a stylish "skirt" drape out of it.

    The sofa is unrecognizable! And when you get tired of the upholstery or want to change the style of the room, you can easily make a new one.

    Not every old and sagging sofa has a place in a landfill. Restoring upholstered furniture can be just as much fun as buying a new one. And maybe even more if you like to do things with your own hands. In this article, Dekorin will tell and show you how to stretch sofas and armchairs with new upholstery, how you can replace the filling of pillows, how to fix springs and hide minor damage. Let your old furniture be a source of pride!

    Restoration of upholstered furniture inside and outside. Step by step examples

    Repair and restoration of upholstered furniture can consist of the following stages:

    1. Disassembling an item into its constituent parts. This is usually required for furniture with wooden legs, armrests, or other parts that need repair or replacement.
    2. Sanding of wooden elements with sandpaper followed by cleaning with a damp cloth. A wet cloth should absorb all small particles, so that the paint (or varnish) will lie evenly and last longer.
    3. Wood painting. Before applying paint with a brush, it is recommended to prime the surface with a primer. We still recommend using spray paint that can be applied easily and evenly, which will greatly simplify your work and save time. Usually 3 layers are more than enough. Once the paint has dried, you can apply a protective coating to prevent chipping.
    1. Replacement internal filling and upholstery. How to rest the springs inside an old sofa or armchair, we will tell you in detail below in this article. As for the upholstered furniture constriction, everything here depends on the characteristics of the product being restored. For example, the seat of a chair in this example was enough to wrap with a new cloth, which was fixed with a stapler. See more examples with step by step photos below!
    2. Assembling a piece of furniture into a single whole.

    How do you like this transformation?

    Restoration of cushions for sofas and armchairs

    Perhaps this item is the simplest and most inexpensive in the process of restoring upholstered furniture. You will need to measure the height, length and width of your pillows and, based on the data obtained, purchase the required amount of foam rubber. Subtract about 5-10mm from each end to get the correct dimensions for the pillow filling. For softness and increased durability, be sure to wrap the foam rubber with batting or padding polyester. Repair of upholstered spring furniture: the best way

    This repair method spring sofa or armchairs is considered the most reliable of all existing ones, although it is time-consuming. Let's consider its implementation step by step:

    1. Make sure you remove any remaining upholstery, staples, and nails from the frame. In this case, the furniture body was already completely ready for the installation of the seat (cleaned, sanded, washed, painted). The springs were removed and set aside for later use. Before that, the master took several photos so as not to forget how they were located.
    2. Install straps (sling) on the lower part of the seat to secure the springs. The more of these strips you install, the stronger the seat will be. Secure them with a stapler, leaving a couple of centimeters of cloth on each edge. The tension should be moderate so that the sling sags slightly when pressing on it.
    3. The extra centimeters on each edge should be folded up and also attached to the frame with a stapler. Repeat these steps until you have installed all the vertical lines, then work the horizontal lines. Remember to intertwine with the vertical ones, not just go under them.
    4. Reinforce the strength of each strap with three small upholstery studs. This is how the whole process of repairing upholstered furniture looks like in the photo:

    5. Now you can go directly to the installation of the springs. You can use the old photo or just distribute them evenly on the support from the lines. The end of each spring should "point" in the same direction as all the others.

    6. The springs are attached to the straps either with a special tool or with a thick string of twine and a special button. Each spring must be secured at three points.

    7. Drive 2 nails into the end of each vertical and horizontal row of springs.

    8. Measure the length of the twine, which will be 2 times the length of the seat plus 40-50 cm. Fold the section in half and create a loop around the nails, as shown in the photo below. After that, pulling the twine, hammer in the nails with a loop with a hammer to the very end.

    9. Now our goal is to weave the springs together to form the seat and connect all the springs into a single whole. Start and finish tying knots from each edge on the second "ring" from the top, and then immediately go to the top rings. This will create a domed seat.

    10. After tying all the springs together, wrap the twine around the stud and hammer in until it stops. Secure the free end of the thread with a stapler.

    11. For the second thread from each fixed loop, repeat steps 9 and 10, but only it should be tied exclusively on the upper rings, without "falling" to the second level from above.

    12. Tie all vertical rows in this way, then horizontal rows, and to be sure, you can still walk diagonally. As a result, none of your springs can move apart from the rest. Be guided by step by step photo for fixing the springs in the upholstered furniture seat:

    Finally, there is still the hauling of the finished seat. In this case, the master simply sewed on the fabric (which could also be done with a stapler), and masked the seams with tape.

    Padding or replacement of upholstery of upholstered furniture

    Padding upholstered furniture can also be quite difficult, but it's definitely worth it, especially if you don't have any special weekend plans. Next, you will learn how to properly pull up an old sofa or chair with your own hands.

    Step 1. Removing old upholstery

    1. It may seem to you that you know this piece of furniture by heart. However, before removing the upholstery, photograph it inside, outside, front and back, taking close-ups of particularly difficult areas around the armrests, etc.
    2. Remove the old upholstery carefully, taking care not to damage it or the furniture itself. You may need a staple remover, screwdriver, and other tools to do this. It is recommended to remove the fabric in the following order:
    • From the bottom base (turning the sofa over on the back or upside down);
    • From the outside of the back and armrests;
    • From the inside of the back and armrests;
    • From the seat.

    The old upholstery will be used as a template for you. We recommend ironing it with an iron before placing it on a new fabric.

    Stage 2. Sewing new upholstery and hauling upholstered furniture

    1. Use your photos and old upholstery as a guide. Start hauling furniture from the bottom base, then tackle the armrests, backrest, and seat in this order.

    2. Cut the fabric according to ready-made template considering the following:

    • Leave an additional 10-15 mm of fabric on the edges that will be sewn with threads;
    • On the edges to be stapled, add about 50mm, which will be used to pull the upholstery over the sofa.

    3. Sew the sections of the fabric where necessary, and pull it over the bottom, securing with a stapler around the edges.

    5. Behind her is the outer part of the armrests.

    Notice how the craftsman did without seams and secured the outer upholstery of the armrests with a hammer.

    The photo below shows an alternative restoration of the armrests. The master secured them with a stapler, and then covered the staples with beautiful braid.

    1. Let's go back to our example. After the armrests, it was the turn of the back. The string sewn around the perimeter gives it an interesting and expressive shape.

    This technique can also be used to give expressiveness to the armrests, which was done during the restoration of this chair.

    1. The outer part of the backrest is fixed in the same way as the outer upholstery of the armrests. Additionally, the sofa was decorated with buttons and new legs. In the following photo, you can compare the sofa before and after renovation and constriction.
